SOUTHSIDE MAGNOLIA

Southside Magnolia is a short film that documents the rebirth of a restaurant and the legacy of Black entrepreneurship.

Told through the eyes of Vic & Dana Cooksey, owners of a beloved Southside Chicago BBQ restaurant that permanently closed during the pandemic and social uprising, the film highlights their entrepreneurial spirit that runs generations deep, unwavering faith, and a community that uplifts them.

Directed by Southside native Rodney Lucas, Southside Magnolia is an intimate portrayal of a community representing the power of Black resilience. Lucas had a deep connection with this neighborhood and identified with the language of the streets and the plight of the oppressed. With a high level of emotional depth, he was able to capture the Cooksey’s story and the perseverance and love embedded within the tapestry of the Southside community.

It was hailed for showcasing the spirit of Black entrepreneurship from The Root, Black Chamber of Commerce, Infatuation and many more.

The film’s soulfulness was enhanced by music from Chance the Rapper, another Southside native, who was eager to collaborate on the depiction of Black excellence in his hometown.

It ultimately led to an entire segment on Good Morning America where Vic and Dana told their story. Most importantly, it created awareness of Krazy Hog's reopening and the successful relaunch of their business, ensuring that their legacy continues.

“The making of “Southside Magnolia” was just as important as the film itself. So the week the film launched we hosted “Black Truth Be Told,” a panel discussion with a few of the Black creators involved in its creation, to shed light on what it takes to tell real Black stories in advertising. The discussion was just as powerful as the film.
